ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (120 Credits)
The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care is a UK Ofqual-regulated qualification designed to provide learners with a broad and applied foundation in health and social care at Level 4.
The programme is intended for learners who have completed Level 3 study in health and social care or a related subject, or who have relevant experience and wish to progress to higher education or develop their careers within the sector.
Qualification Overview
Learners develop knowledge and practical understanding of health and social care practice, person-centred care, health and wellbeing, professional development, safeguarding, communication, equality and diversity, and service improvement. The qualification combines four mandatory units with a wide range of specialist optional units, enabling learners to tailor their studies towards areas such as public health, leadership, resource management, and specialized support pathways.
Throughout the programme, learners are encouraged to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic health and social care settings, developing critical thinking, reflective practice, professional judgement and evidence-based decision-making skills that support progression into employment or higher-level study.

What You Will Study

Teaching and Learning Approach
The programme is delivered through structured teaching blocks supported by tutor-led sessions, guided learning, seminars, case studies, independent research and assignment preparation.
Learning focuses on applying health and social care principles to realistic professional scenarios, encouraging learners to evaluate legislation, improve care delivery, and reflect on professional practice. Collaborative learning, discussion and critical analysis are integrated throughout the programme to support the development of professional competence. Learners are expected to demonstrate increasing autonomy in research and strategic evaluation.
Entry Requirements
This programme is designed for learners aged 18 and above. Typical entry profile includes:
- GCE Advanced Level qualifications supported by GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, or
- ATHE Level 3 Diploma or another Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care or a related discipline, or
- Access to Higher Education Diploma, or
- Equivalent international qualifications, or
- Relevant professional experience within the health and social care sector (subject to assessment).
English language requirement (for non-native speakers): IELTS 5.5 or equivalent (CEFR B2 level). Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be considered where appropriate.
Assessment Methodology
Assessment is completed through internally assessed coursework assignments. Learners are assessed against ATHE learning outcomes and may achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction grades.

Progression Opportunities
On successful completion, learners may progress to:
- ATHE Level 5 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

- The second year of undergraduate degree programmes at universities that recognise the qualification (subject to university entry requirements)
- Employment or career progression within health and social care settings
- Supervisory or senior support roles within health and social care organisations
- Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) and Higher Apprenticeships in health and social care sectors
