ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Computing (120 Credits)
The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Computing is a UK Ofqual-regulated qualification designed to provide learners with a strong academic and practical foundation in computing.
It is suitable for learners progressing from Level 3 computing or related qualifications, as well as those seeking entry into the IT industry, apprenticeships, or higher education in computing-related disciplines.
Qualification Overview
The qualification develops knowledge and practical skills across core areas of computing, including systems development, programming, databases, networking, cyber security, and digital ethics. Learners also develop analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and professional competencies required in modern IT environments.
A key feature of the programme is its applied learning approach. Learners complete structured assignments and a synoptic computing project that integrates knowledge across multiple units to solve real-world computing problems.

Teaching and Learning Approach
The programme is delivered through structured teaching blocks supported by tutor-led sessions, practical workshops, guided learning, and independent study.
Each module is typically delivered over a 10-week teaching block, combining taught content with practical exercises, coding tasks, research activities, and assignment development. Learners are expected to engage in independent technical practice and apply computing concepts to real or simulated scenarios.
Entry Requirements
This programme is designed for learners aged 18 and above. Typical entry profile includes:
- ATHE Level 3 Diploma in Computing or a related qualification, or
- Equivalent international qualifications, or
- Relevant work experience in IT (subject to assessment)
Applicants without formal qualifications may be considered based on experience and demonstrated ability to study at Level 4.
English language requirement (for non-native speakers): IELTS 5.5 or equivalent (CEFR B2 level). Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be considered where appropriate.
Assessment Methodology
Assessment is completed through internally assessed coursework and practical assignments. Learners are assessed against ATHE learning outcomes and may achieve Pass, Merit, or Distinction grades.
Assessment methods include written reports, practical coding tasks, case studies, presentations, and a synoptic computing project that integrates learning across units.
Progression Opportunities
On successful completion, learners may progress to:
- ATHE Level 5 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Computing
- Higher education degree programmes in computing or IT-related fields (subject to entry requirements)
- Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) in digital and computing disciplines
- Apprenticeships in software development, cyber security, networking, or IT support
- Employment in roles such as junior developer, IT technician, systems support, or data assistant
